POST HISTORY

This page is a work in progress to capture some of the history of Yellville's American Legion Post 61 and the historical building that houses it. If you have notable historical information on The Hut and/or Post 61 that you would like to see here, please message info@alpost61yellville.org.

Our Post Name

Both Denis Estes and John Wilson Williams were killed in action supporting the United States and its allies. It is an honor for our American Legion Post 61 to recognize the sacrifice of these two young-in-their-time patriots as the namesakes for our Yellville post:
Estes-Williams American Legion Post 61.

Here are links to some history of these notable veterans:

World War I  - Denis Estes

World War II - John Wilson Williams

Our Beginnings

Yellville's American Legion Post 61 was established in December of 1920 by a group of local WWI veterans. The below charter membership roll, re-created after WWII, reflecting the updated post name "Estes-Williams", is a list of the founding members of Post 61.

Thirteen years passed before Post 61 had  their own official home, The Hut.
The Encyclopedia of Arkansas provides some History of the Hut.

In December of 2020 with the support of Post 61 membership, veteran Larry Poetz initiated the registration of Estes-Williams American Legion Hut #61 in the National Register of Historic Places.
